San Lorenzo – Vendicari
San Lorenzo – Case Cittadella is the huge (many kilometers long) and breathtaking beach located on the south side of the reserve, with golden sand beaches and Caribbean Sea. In the northern part of this beach there can be few people also in high season. HOW TO GET THERE Can be reached only by car/motorbike (20 minutes from Syracuse) From the hostel go right, go past the train station, via Ermocrate and go over the big roundabout towards “Noto-Avola” and all the directions (Catania included). Continue past the cemetery with a first set of traffic lights, and past the second traffic light. Keep on going straight ahead. When you see the blue sign to Catania (on the right) slow down a bit but continue past the exit Catania, and after 100 meters take the first left (following the green sign to Gela-Noto-Avola Rosolini: it is the same road to Catania but in the opposite direction). Once on the motorway Siracusa-Noto-Avola-Rosolini, take the exit Noto. After the exit follow the signs to Pachino – Portopalo CP. On the road Noto-Pachino continue past the main entrance of Vendicari. Turn left when you find the first indication to “San Lorenzo” and you will arrive to the socalled small village. When you get to the village of San Lorenzo, park close to the most northern road (IX Road – IX Strada), and walk to the nearby beach. For those who prefer less crowded places walk to the north (the sea will be on your right) until you reach the northern part of the beach called Case Cittadella. In the months from June to Semptember you can find a part closed by a fence (the turtles Caretta-Caretta lay their eggs there, so walking in that area is prohibited).
San Lorenzo – Vendicari E’ l’enorme e bellissima spiaggia posta sul lato sud della riserva, con sabbia dorata finissima e mare caraibico. Raggiungibile solo con mezzi privati. Dall’ostello andare a destra, superare la stazione ferroviaria e la rotonda di Viale Ermocrate e proseguire dritto in direzione Avola-Noto. Si passa il cimitero con un primo semaforo, si prosegue e si arriva a un secondo semaforo. Sempre dritto. Quando si raggiunge il cartello per Catania si rallenta ma si prosegue e dopo 100 metri si svolta a sinistra indirezione Gela-Avola-Noto-Rosolini (é la medesima strada per Catania ma in direzione opposta). Una volta imboccata l’autostrada Siracusa-Avola-Noto-Rosolini, uscire a Noto. Dopo l’uscita seguire le indicazioni per Pachino o Portopalo di C.P. Sulla Noto Pachino. Superare l’ingresso della riserva di Vendicari proseguendo verso sud. Una traversa sulla sinistra con l’indicazione “San Lorenzo” porterà al villaggetto omonimo. Giunti al villaggio di San Lorenzo, parcheggiare al limite nord del villaggio (IX strada), da cui si raggiunge immediatamente la spiaggia. Per chi ama la solitudine è possibile camminare in direzione nord all’interno della riserva (il mare sarà alla vostra destra) fino a che non si raggiunge la parte più a nord della spiaggia, chiamata Case Cittadella. Nei mesi da giugno ad agosto potrete trovare una barriera di legno che impedisce di proseguire verso nord per non disturbare le tartarughe marine Caretta-Caretta che qui depositano le loro uova.
